2012 Toyota Camry Overview
2012 Toyota Camry Overview
2012 sees the unveiling of the seventh generation of the best-selling car in the United States. For the 2012 model year, Toyota has almost completely redesigned the Camry inside, outside, and under the hood. While the new Toyota Camry may look very similar to the previous version, its design has been tweaked and updated across the board. Instead of creating something new, Toyota decided to build on the sedan’s strengths and make a good vehicle even better.
New for 2012
The 2012 Toyota Camry models mark the launch of a redesigned new generation of the sedan.
- Complete redesign of almost the entire car, including a better and more comfortable interior
- Additional standard features at all trim levels
- More powerful engine choices and improved suspension
The dimensions of the 2012 Toyota Camry remain the same as the previous generation’s model, but the overall design of the exterior has been restyled. Sharper edges and boxier corners give the new Toyota Camry an edgier look while also improving aerodynamics. The front and rear have been redesigned, and the roofline has been tucked up towards the back to give the sedan a more wedge-like profile, while improving headroom in the rear seats. The front pillars have been narrowed to open up the Toyota Camry, and improve driver visibility.
Interior & Cargo
The interior of the new 2012 Toyota Camry has been completely redesigned with improved quality materials, a better layout, and more space for all passengers. Not only have the front seats been updated to make them more comfortable and supportive, they have been moved so that legroom in the rear is improved. The change in the roofline also adds additional rear space that taller passengers will enjoy. The rear seat remains a 60/40-split folding bench, but it also has improved padding, and the trunk space has been increased.
There are four trim levels to choose from for the 2012 model year, and all are well appointed. The base Toyota Camry L includes power windows and mirrors, air conditioning, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and a six-speaker audio system as standard. The LE model adds power locks and a touchscreen interface. Stepping up again to the SE trim adds sport seats and unique interior styling, while the XLE provides a luxurious interior with leather upholstery.
Standard safety features for all models of the 2012 Toyota Camry include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, stability control, front seat knee airbags, front and rear side airbags, and full-length side-curtain airbags. Passenger side knee airbags as standard are a new addition for the 2012 model year. A rearview camera comes with the XLE V-6 model, and may be available as an option with some of the lower trim levels. A blind-spot detection warning system is also available as an option.
There are two engine options for the 2012 Toyota Camry, but all come with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission as standard. The base models of the Toyota Camry are powered by a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that has been improved over the previous year’s engine. It provides 178 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, and has an estimated gas mileage of 25/35 mpg city/highway.
The SE and XLE trim models of the 2012 Toyota Camry are equipped with a V-6 engine. This engine has also been improved over what was found under the hood of the previous year’s model. It now produces 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, and has an estimated fuel economy of 21/30 mpg city/highway.
Although both engines have been improved, the power output of each is relatively similar to the 2011 models. Where the gains have been made is in the gas mileage of each, as they are both much more efficient. Improvements to the sheet metal, chassis, and suspension of the 2012 Toyota Camry mean that the ride is smoother and handling is a lot more confident. The electric assist steering in the higher trim levels is more responsive than in the lower ones, which use a different company’s version, but steering is overall improved and feels more connected with the road.
