2014 Porsche Boxster Overview
2014 Porsche Boxster Overview
The Porsche Boxster is a mid-engine, two-seat roaster in production from 1996 to the present. Models have come in hardtop or convertible. The Boxster is the first reintroduction of a roadster to the Porsche lineup since the 550 Spyder was discontinued in 1956. With a limited number of roadsters sold by any maker, and even fewer in the sport luxury class, the Boxster has next to no competition other than the three models listed under key competitors. As such, redesigns are usually limited, but there was a fairly significant makeover for the models for the 2013 lineup; following that, little has changed for 2014.
The Boxster is consistently lauded for its performance, specifically for its incredible handling. The Boxster in addition is known for its very sporty and attractive styling and it is the most affordable sport-class model within the Porsche lineup. While it does not offer quite the intense driving experience as some of the 911 models or anything close to the supercars in the Porsche lineup, within its class, and within most people’s budget, the Boxster is a highly sought after model. The 2014 models continue in this path and like their near-identical predecessor, it gets positive reviews for the excellent and attractive design, a high quality and luxurious interior with upgraded materials, a quiet cabin when the top is up, and perhaps the best handling of any model in its limited class. With the praise there has been some criticism as well, and this again flows over from last year’s very similar models. Visibility may be poor with the top up, the engine power output on paper doesn’t look quite up to Porsche standards (though the engineering, the handling, and the feel make up for this by many standards). Similarly, the pricing for the pure horsepower or torque count may not seem like a great buy, but again, this is you fail to take into account other engineering elements and the impressive handling.
New for 2014
There are no changes for 2014.
The two-door sport coupe comes as a convertible, the top opens electronically in about nine seconds and at speeds of up to 31 mph. It is one of the more recognizable models on the road with a low profile, prominent headlights in flared housings going up the hood, a wide and aggressive stance with the rear tires pushed nearly to the back and short front overhang, sides dominated by large intakes, and prominent front intakes.19-inch wheels are standard and 20-inch wheels are available. Other features include standard LED daytime running lights and optional bi-xenon high-intensity discharge lights.
Interior & Cargo
The Boxster has room for two in the small cockpit. There are several interior trims and colors to choose from with different quality materials available. Most of the vehicle controls can be found in the prominent center console and the gauges on the dash are large and easy to read. There is also a 4.6-inch screen integrated with the gauge cluster. It has a high-end sound system standard, compatible with CD, MP3, iPod and other modern music forms, and a Bose system is optional. The audio system is controlled using a large seven-inch screen. Options include dual-zone climate control and a navigation system.
Safety features include front-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability.
The Boxster has a mid-engine for better balance, a feature usually only found on high-end sport car models. Base models get a 2.7-liter, H-6, premium gasoline engine rated at 265-hp. The S model gets a new 3.4-liter, H-6, premium gasoline engine rated 315-hp. Both get a six-speed manual standard and a seven-speed auto-shift manual with overdrive is available. Models have great acceleration, but handling is the highlight, offering drivers a high-end sport car feel. It is rated 20/28 to 22/32 mpg city/highway.
