2014 Porsche 918 Hybrid Spyder AWD 2-Dr Coupe V8 Overview
2014 Porsche 918 Overview
The Porsche 918 is an extremely limited hybrid supercar (planned 918 models only). The concept was introduced in March 2010 as the 918 Spyder powered by a 4.6-liter V-8 and two electric motors, together rated at 887 horsepower. Genuine production begins late 2013 and it is expected to remain in production only until 2014. Porsche will offer two body styles: the two-door roadster, which is the sport consumer version, and the two-door coupe racing version. It uses a mid-engine four-wheel-drive setup. The 918 models have an incredibly exotic design with large tires, exaggerated intakes in the front and the sides, and the exaggerated flared headlight housings. The roadster version is a convertible. The price tag puts these models well out of range for most, approaching a million dollar starting price.
New for 2014
The Porsche 918 Spyder and RSR are all new to the Porsche lineup.
It is a futuristic design, very low and aerodynamic with large sport tires pushed all the way to the rear and about a foot of overhang in the front. It has Porsche’s flared headlight housings that curve gradually toward the cockpit. The slant of the windshield may remind drivers of the 911 flagship model but the transition to the rear makes a smoother line. Back to the front, it features large lower intakes close to the ground and the side intakes are set behind the door and take up the entire side up to the side windows. The large rear spoiler adjusts automatically for maximum performance. The Porsche 918 is 182.2 inches long, 76.4 inches wide, and stands 45.9 inches tall. It has a wheelbase of 107.5 inches. It has a curb weight of 3715 pounds.
Interior & Cargo
It is a cramped cockpit with room for two in sport bucket seats. Interior trims and features are expected to be customized to some extent, but the focus is purely performance, do not expect a lot of focus on luxury. The setup is very attractive with a three-spoke steering wheel with the Porsche logo in the center, large gauges jutting out from the dash viewed easily through the gap in the steering wheel. These will be obstructed while turning but the driver will want their eyes on the road most of the time anyway. There is a prominent center console with a large screen where most of the vehicle’s functions can be controlled.
Generally front impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability are safety requirements for vehicles sold in the United States. Specialty cars may sometimes avoid these requirements. Currently there is no word on the safety features available in the Porsche 918.
Porsche is calling the 918 models the future of performance for their sport models and this includes their flagship models, the 911. Whether that means more models, or all models, will incorporate some sort of hybrid system is unknown, but in the case of the 918 it is the electric motors which allow the V-8 (very impressive own its own) to achieve stats that put the 918 in a very select league of vehicles.
The 4.6-liter V-8 engine is rated at 608 horsepower, and then there is a hybrid module on the rear axle, which adds 154 horsepower, and an electric motor on the front axle that adds 127 horsepower for a total for 887 horsepower. These engines genuinely work together so drivers are getting the full benefit of all of that advanced engineering technology. In seventh gear, the Porsche 918 can get 940 lb-ft of torque. It uses an advanced seven-speed automatic auto-manual transmission that shifts fast and flawlessly, performing quicker shifts in automatic than is possible by the human hand.
