2014 Jeep Compass Latitude 4WD 4-Dr Sport Utility I4 Overview
2014 Jeep Compass Overview
The 2014 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover and, like most Jeep vehicles, is a bit of an off-road vehicle at heart. It’s no Jeep Wrangler, but it will suffice for the weekend warrior who wants to tackle some rugged terrain or the commuter who is trying to get to work in the snow. While the Compass excels in its off-road capabilities, it lags a bit when it comes to performance. The new 2014 six-speed automatic transmission helps, but if off-roading is what you’re looking for, the Compass may not be up to the task. But it’s good for people on the go who need to store some gear or haul some kids.
The 2014 Compass comes in three trims: Sport, Latitude, and Limited.
New for 2014
The Jeep Compass sees a couple of improvements and upgrades in 2014:
- Optional six-speed automatic transmission replaces the CVT in most models
- Limited trim gets a rearview camera and an upgraded audio
- Front-seat side airbags are now standard for all models
- Minor styling updates inside and out
The 2014 Jeep Compass offers the rugged jeep-look that you’d expect along with a bit of a refined look making it smaller than, yet similar to the Jeep Cherokee. The base Sport and midlevel Latitude feature 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails for transporting cargo, and foglamps. Also included in the Sport are heated mirrors that make visibility easier in the cold. Moving up to the Limited model, the 2014 Jeep Compass receives upgraded 18-inch alloy wheels, but otherwise remains nearly the same on the exterior. Seventeen-inch painted aluminum wheels are optional with the 2.4-liter engine. All models come with a fixed liftgate window and a liftgate door.
Exterior options include several items within packages for the Latitude and Limited trims. This includes the Sun and Sound group package, which includes a sunroof. On models with four-wheel drive, a Freedom-Drive II Off-road Group package adds 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, and skid plates. Paint selections include nine colors from Winter Chill Pearl Coat to Deep Cherry Red.
Interior & Cargo
The 2014 Jeep Compass, especially when compared to other compact crossovers, is relatively roomy for average-sized drivers and passengers, although some rear-seat passengers may feel a bit cramped in the back. Taller rear-seat passengers, on the other hand, may find legroom tight. The 2014 Compass is sporting some interior upgrades, however Bluetooth and a USB port, which come standard on most rivals, remain optional even on the upper trim levels.
Standard and optional features vary depending on the trim level. Standard features for the Sport include air-conditioning, cruise control, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, a tilt-only steering wheel, a 115-volt household power outlet, and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. Adding the Power Value Group package provides full power accessories, heated mirrors, keyless entry, and additional body-color exterior pieces.
The Latitude gets these features as well as chrome interior trim, mesh cloth seat upholstery, a height-adjustable driver seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Limited includes automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustments, a driver information display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, 28GB of digital music storage, and satellite radio.
The 2014 Compass offers decent cargo space at 53.6 cubic feet. It also offers some interesting features, such as a cooled glove box, a rechargeable LED cargo light that pops out for use as a flashlight, and optional speakers that flip down and out from the raised liftgate for outdoor listening.
The 2014 Jeep Compass comes with a list of standard safety features, including anti-lock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is also standard when you upgrade to the Limited trim and is available as an option on the Sport and Latitude. The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group addition provides hill-descent and hill-start control.
The 2014 Jeep Compass Sport and Latitude come equipped with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. A larger, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque is standard on the Limited trim and optional on the Sport and Latitude. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for the Sport, while the Latitude and Limited receive a new six-speed automatic as standard. To get the optional 4WD system with low-range gearing and hill-descent control, it is necessary to choose the Freedom Drive II Group which only comes with a 2.4-liter engine and CVT. Unfortunately, the CVT option also reduces fuel efficiency, creates extra driving noise, and causes a decrease in overall performance.
Fuel economy isn’t all that impressive at 21/24 mpg city/highway for the 2.0-liter engine and at 23/25 mpg city/highway for the 2.4-liter option. Acceleration is sluggish mainly because the Jeep Compass is too big for its small engine. While it’s enough to get the job done, it won’t do much else. The four-wheel drive is good for inclement weather and off-road use, but typically the cost won’t justify getting a Jeep Compass compared to many of the competitors.
