2014 BMW X1 sDrive28i RWD 4-Dr Sport Utility I4 Overview
2014 BMW X1 Overview
The 2014 BMW X1 is the smallest crossover SUV available from the German manufacturer. Launched for the first time in the U.S. for the 2013 model year, the X1 is not only the smallest SUV on offer, but it is the most inexpensive of all vehicles provided by BMW. As a result, the 2014 BMW X1 can compete with both the luxury crossover SUV models, as well as the mainstream players like the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V.
New for 2014
The BMW X1 was a brand-new vehicle introduced in 2012 for the 2013 model year in the U.S. As such, the crossover SUV remains unchanged for the 2014 models.
The design of the BMW X1 is in keeping with the rest of the SUV models from BMW. From the outside, the 2014 BMW X1 just looks like a smaller version of the BMW X3. It features the signature twin kidney-shaped grille setup found across BMW vehicles. The hood lines continue up the front window and down the steeply sloped rear window that give the crossover SUV the appearance of forward motion. The high beltline of the sides and the silver under-tray make the 2014 BMW X1 look sporty and rugged at the same time.
Interior & Cargo
The interior of the 2014 BMW X1 is as you would expect from any of the vehicles in the lineup. As with other models that have been redesigned of late, the cabin has a cockpit feel that is lined with high-end materials. Leather-like material is coupled with wood trim as standard, but can be upgraded to real leather for a plusher feel.
The driving position of the 2014 BMW X1 is lower and more car-like than many of its competitors, but the leg and headroom is plentiful in the front seats. The rear bench seat features a 40/20/40 split, but will only seat two adults in comfort. Taller adults will find that the legroom in back is also limited. The ability to recline the rear seats can help make up for the smaller amount of legroom compared to the BMW X3. Cargo space is adequate and resembles that found in a car if the rear seats are folded up.
Standard safety equipment found across all models of the 2014 BMW X1 includes anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control with rollover sensor, and integrated traction control, a tire pressure monitor system, and six airbags. Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera can be included as options.
There are three trim lines and two engine options for the 2014 BMW X1 models. The 2014 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i are fitted with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that provides 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission that includes an auto stop/start feature. This system stops and restarts the engine when idling, which leads to improved gas mileage of the X1. The difference between the two models is that the X1 sDrive28i is rear-wheel drive and the X1 xDrive28i is all-wheel drive.
The third model of the 2014 BMW X1 is the xDrive35i. This model comes with all-wheel drive only and is powered by a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The X1 xDrive35i comes with a six-speed automatic transmission only. Gas mileage for the xDrive35i is 18/27 mpg city/highway, while it’s 24/34 and 22/33 mpg city/highway for the sDrive28i and xDrive28i, respectively.
When behind the wheel of the 2014 BMW X1, the driving experience is closer to that in a sport sedan than in an SUV. While the X1 models do have a higher driver position than the sport sedans created by the manufacturer, they do come with the same driving dynamics expected when you get behind the wheel of any BMW vehicle. The smaller size of the 2014 BMW X1 makes it nimble and agile, as well as providing improved gas mileage. The additional size makes it a functional choice for those looking for added cargo space, while not giving up a comfortable ride on the highway.
