2013 Acura MDX Technology Pkg AWD 4-Dr Sport Utility V6 Overview
2013 Acura MDX Overview
The 2013 Acura MDX is a highly refined, midsize crossover SUV with an elegant design and a beautiful interior in keeping with its luxury status. Though outshined in terms of acceleration, the Acura MDX’s ample power and outstanding maneuverability give it a slight edge on much of the competition. The MDX comes loaded with a long list of great standard features as well. The MDX offers plenty of cargo space and seats up to seven, making it a great family vehicle, and has ample towing capacity as well.
New for 2013
The Acura MDX receives no changes for the 2013 model year.
A handsome vehicle, the 2013 Acura MDX has held up well since its last redesign in 2007. One of Honda’s most favorable designs, the elegant MDX adds a bit of flair to the typical boxy appearance of an SUV. It blends both traditional and modern elements in its design. The meticulously sculpted sheet metal that graces an upright body is an understated touch of class for this luxury midsize SUV. Its severe front-end is one drawback to its otherwise graceful appearance. Standard exterior features include 18-inch, alloy wheels with all-season tires, a power glass sunroof with remote operation, and a rear spoiler. Nineteen-inch wheels are available as an option. A choice of several body colors is also available, including Aspen White Pearl, Bali Blue Pearl, and Dark Cherry Pearl.
Interior & Cargo
Sure signs of the Acura MDX’s luxury status are evidenced by its elegant interior. Designed with Milano leather and wood-grain trim, with a dash that sits more vertical than one found in other Acuras, the overall design is clean with well-placed gauges. One caveat to its otherwise appealing design is its rather cluttered instrument panel, though the controls are intuitively grouped and easy to use once the driver gets a feel for them. Though not as luxurious as some of its high-end, European rivals, the MDX is loaded with great standard features. The Panasonic/ELS surround-sound audio system is one of the best available on the market, as is the navigation system. The stereo includes a six-CD changer and MP3 playback with eight total speakers. A three-month starting subscription to XM satellite radio service is included as well. The MDX also includes full power accessories such as power door locks, power mirrors and two one-touch power windows.
The MDX offers a fairly spacious cabin compared to rival three-row midsize SUVs, though the rear seats can more comfortably seat children than adults. The second row offers far more legroom than the back and even reclines for additional comfort. The MDX contains 83.5 cubic feet of space with the second and third row of seats folded down, which is a bit more cargo space than other vehicles in its class. The leather seats come in a choice of three colors, including Ebony, Graystone and Parchment. Both the driver and passenger seats are height adjustable and include eight-way power adjustment. Power adjustable lumbar support is also equipped on the driver seat.
Standard safety features equipped on the 2013 Acura MDX include anti-lock brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and stability control with a towing feature. An optional collision warning and braking system is available, which monitors driving in order to alert the driver of a possible collision. The system also applies the brakes and cinches up the seatbelts in the event of an imminent impact. The MDX ranks about average for its class in brake testing, coming to a stop from 60 mph in 123 feet.
In federal crash testing the 2013 Acura MDX received four out of five stars for its overall impact protection, garnering four stars for its frontal impact and five stars for its side impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the MDX its best rating of “Good” for its frontal offset, side impact and roof strength tests.
The 2013 Acura MDX is equipped with a 3.7-liter, six-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed, automatic transmission and includes standard all-wheel drive as well. This engine is capable of pushing the MDX from zero to 60 mph in a decent 7.1 seconds, about average for a vehicle in its class. Estimated fuel economy also comes in about average for its class, getting 16/21 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined. Maximum towing capacity stands at 5000 pounds for the MDX when it is properly equipped.
The MDX is rather nimble compared to many of its rivals. The all-wheel-drive system allows for smooth shifting during hard cornering. Body roll is also kept to a minimum. The active dampers (available with the Advance package) soak up the bumps when necessary and firm up when the pace quickens, though the standard suspension works just fine (and without the added cost). The standard suspension is compliant enough to absorb most road imperfections, though active dampers are available as an option with the Advance Package for improved comfort.
